Six Will Fix: Doing the Math On Education Budget

I wasn't curious about my friend's Middle Name on Facebook which was "Sixwillfix" until I saw recently on the Friends' activity that there was someone commenting on his friend having the same Middle name SixwillFix. So that was the story of how I was able to know about this campaign. :)

Invest in the future of the nation, 6% of GNP to education!

From the Facebook page of the Campaign

Description
: In 1996, the International Commission of Education in the Twenty First Century, headed by former European Commission President Jacques Delors, submitted a report to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proposing that at least six (6) per cent of the country’s Gross National Product (GNP) should be allocated to education spending.

Education – both as an input and output of growth and development policy – is central to economic and human well-being of a country. By itself, education is an important means towards development; it is also an important ends by itself because it provides citizens with the capacity towards self-actualization and self-dignity.

So, how this campaign started:

The campaign was formed in June 2008 be youth organizations under the Youth Against Debt, which is backed by economic think tank Freedom from Debt Coalition.
According to the group, the government must appropriate at least six percent of the GNP to education, as suggested by the Delors Report of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Task Force on Education for the Twenty-first Century. The campaign's name was therefore derived from the said UNESCO standard.
However, the group recognizes that the standard set by UNESCO in budgeting education is not the ultimate answer in solving the Philippines' education woes. For them, they consider the “six will fix” premise as a “good start” for Philippine education.

So , If you care enough for education in your country, not just for your generation but for you children in the future - begin by joining us in this campaign. :)
